A ski tourer has been killed by an avalanche in Oberkärnten on Friday. It all happened on the Scharnik in the Kreuzeckgruppe, west from Spital an der Drau

The avalanche debris was located about 150 meters below the top. When the man who left for his tour at 9 AM was reported missing at 3 PM, mountain rescue discovered the avalanche from the helicopter. The missing man was found dead. (Sources 1 & 2). Our thoughts are with family and friends.

The avalanche forecasters in Carinthia mentioned the problem with the old snow layers and the wind-drifted snow the last couple of days. It’s not clear wether the victim released the avalanche himself or if it was triggered spontaneously. When you want to ride in the backcountry, always bring your avalanche beacon, shovel and probe and never go out alone, but always with your powder buddies.
