Amazing! Powderalert #5 brought loads and loads of fresh powder to the southern Alps and later to the northern Alps as well. The southern Alps received up to 171 cm (that’s not 170) above 2200 meter. The regions in Switzerland north of the main alpine ridge got about 25-60 cm of snow in the last 36 hours. That means most parts of the Alps got a solid base for the rest of the season, expect for the eastern parts of Tirol, Salzburgerland and Steiermark (the only got up to 10 cm of freshies, only the higher parts of the mountain received 20 cm). Some parts of the Savoie didn’t get that much snow either.

Most snow fell in the resorts that are not in the main alpine ridge and in the resorts in Italy.

Big winners are the resort in the southern French Alps, the resorts west and south of the main alpine ridge (the southern Alps), the resorts in the main alpine ridge and the resorts north of the Swiss alpine ridge. This might sound a bit strange, so we’ll give you an advice on where to? What will the wetter be like the next couple of days? What is happening after the weekend?

Where to go?

You’ll find an overview of the resorts where you can find good snow and that are open today, or will open tomorrow. All resorts below already had a solid base, some have some nice treeskiing and they got lots of freshies.

Could be an option, but no base on the lower mountain and they had strong winds!

The weather the next couple of days

The last snow is falling in the southern Piemonte and the resorts more east today. You can expect 2-10 cm. It’s sunny in the other parts of the Alps. The sun is shining in the Alps on Saturday and the combination of sun and fresh powder means powderstress. Ride with your head and remember ‘powder is fun, but so is tomorrow’. The first clouds are coming in on Saturday in the west. This is the first announcement of a new depression. It will start snowing in the northern French Alps and the Berner Oberland on Sunday morning and it will start snowing in the resort more to the east later. You can expect 5-20 cm of freshies till Monday, locally maybe around 30 cm.

The long term

The current will turn to the west-northwest on Monday. This is the start for a weststau and powderalert #6. Lots of snow in the northern French Alps, but this will expand into the complete northern Alps later. There will be föhn blowing in the south. More about that later. I’m back on Monday.

Enjoy the powder and ride safe!
