What a start in the Alps! The southern Alps (including the French southern Alps and the resorts in the main alpine ridge) got their base layer for the season last week. This week the complete western and northern Alps will get their base layer! According to the latest snowmaps it will keep snowing until this weekend!
The webcams of today show how much snow has fallen in the western Alps (they got over 60 cm of freshies). When you have a look at the powder forecast maps, you’ll see it’s quite clear what will happen the next four days. Powderalert #6 is for the western and northern Alps. Just like Powderalert #7 that will follow later this week.
This map shows exactly where the most snow will fall the next four days (check out our forecastpage for more details). The northwestern part of the Alps is getting hammered by the northweststau and its snowcover is growing fast. Lots of snow in the higher alpine areas of the western Alps, covering all the sharks. And with about 70 cm of freshies on the alpine meadows of Vorarlberg and the Arlberg it’s time to start waxing your ski’s or snowboard! Especially here, because there is already a base of 50 cm (according to the latest avalanche bulletin).
Johanna will loose her grip on the Alps after Wednesday, and as a result the sun will come out on Thursday (and maybe on Wednesday as well). Wednesday and Thursday will be great days to get out there! Verbier and Engelberg are open and more and more smaller resorts are opening their lifts. Let us know when a resort opens its lifts!
Powderalert #7
The second storm will follow on Friday. This storm will move to the Alps from the United Kingdom. This storm will bring lots of snow this weekend. The high pressure area that is moving to the Alps from the Atlantic Ocean will be an important factor. Its speed and the direction of this high pressure area pretty much determines where and how much it will snow. More about this interesting development later this week.

Verbier is closed today and tomorrow as well they think, just too much snowfall. We’ve been up with some friends to play around and we already had 80-100cm at 2.100. Some liftmen told me it’s been more than 1 meter above Ruinettes (2.200 meters). And it just started dumping again…

@Guest794… Models aren’t clear about that yet. You’re right the Pongau region definitely needs some snow. The eastern Alps aren’t favoured at the moment.
