PA#24: fresh snow and wind = avalanche danger

PA#24: fresh snow and wind = avalanche danger

About 30-50 centimeter of freshies came down in the Salzburgerland, the northwest of the Steiermark, Ost-Tirol and the northeast of Tirol since the start of PowderAlert #24. The wind has been moving the snow around above the treeline and there’s a lot of dangerous drift snow on faces with a southern exposition. This layer bonds really bad with the old layer and the weight of only one skier or snowboarder is enough to trigger an avalanche. The avalanche danger today in Steiermark is big (4/5) and considerable (3/5) in Tirol. The wind had less force lower on the mountain. Adapt your riding to the avalanche danger and check the most current avalanche bulletin. The situation in the other regions in the Alps is far less tense than in the ones mentioned above.

FWT stop Fierberbrunn

Lots of freshies for the FWT stop in Fieberbrunn! Good for the contest, but some extra work to clear the face to guarantee safe riding conditions. The contest will be on on Saturday morning from 8.30 CET. You can watch it live here.

Powder Advice

Northern Alps east: Friday and Saturday

Northern Alps central: (especially the east): Friday and Saturday

PowderAlert#25 is on his way!

Will this winter ever come to and? A new storm will hit continental Europe and will bring the first freshies in the night of Saturday to Sunday. This storm is moving to the southern Alps first, but will bring snow to other regions of the Alps later.Wind is turning south, southern föhn will rise = snow for the south

PowderAlert#25

The southern föhn will rise during Saturday. As a result the temperatures will rise in the northern Alps and the clouds will come in in the southern Alps (first the French southern Alps, later the other regions of the southern Alp). It will probably storm (föhn) big time in the northern Alps. You can expect a lot of snow between Sunday and Tuesday morning in the southern Alps. Expect around 40-90 centimeter of freshies above 1800 meters.Cold temperatures in the southern Alps, temporarily föhn in the northern Alps

The föhn will be gone by Monday and cold humid air can move into the French northern Alps (and the other regions of the northern Alps will be next). You can expect 30-70 centimeters of freshies especially in the French northern Alps between Monday and Wednesday afternoon. It will start puking again, but where do you want to be for the best snow?

Powderadvice

The northern Alps can expect snow on Monday and Tuesday. Not the quantities as they expect in the western and southern Alps, but you can expect 10-25 centimeters from Monday night till Wednesday (locally even 35 centimeters). This is subject to change though. A small change in the weather systems might result in more snow for the northern Alps.

Warmer on the long term?

The jetstream is moving to the north and warmer air might move into the Alps after Thursday. The current will be westsouthwest, which should have the best changes for snow in the French (southern)Alps.

Stay stoked
