Live: lots of freshies in Vorarlberg

Live: lots of freshies in Vorarlberg

Just like in the French northern Alps and Switzerland, an active depression brought snow to Austria. Especially the west and to a lesser extent the Austrian main alpine ridge got the most snow. It wasn’t as much snow as in Switzerland or France, but the start of the winter is here. Where did the snow fall in Austria this weekend?

Vorarlberg and the west of Tyrol

The most snow came down in the Vorarlberg and the west of Tyrol. Because it was too warm initially, the glaciers in the main ridge ridge also got some freshies. It was snowing pretty much everywhere (even in Kärnten), but Voralberg got the most snow. Below you’ll see some data from Saturday morning.

Another 20 centimeters of snow came down in Vorarlberg between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning. The other regions in Austria didn’t get that much snow, but enough to show some nice images.

If there’ll be another dump in Vorarlberg and the western parts of Tyrol, they can open the lifts. The conditions are already great on the glaciers. The other regions in Austria need more snow.

A thicker snow cover in the west and in the main alpine ridge
A thicker snow cover in the west and in the main alpine ridge

The snow cover in Vorarlberg at the moment:

  • 1200 meter: 5-30 cm
  • 2000 meter: 35-70 cm
  • 2700 meter: 40-90 cm (sometimes bare due to the wind and sun)

The snow cover in other regions in Austria at the moment:

  • 1200 meter: 0-10 cm
  • 2000 meter: 5-20 cm
  • 2700 meter: 40-120 cm (sometimes bare due to the wind and sun)

Conclusion: the first base is there and there’s even more snow on the maps. Vorarlberg will be your best bet. The glacier resorts also have great conditons, but stay on the slopes.

What about the rest of the Alps?

Great snow conditions in Lech am Arlberg!
Once you’ve crossed the lower area covered with ski cannons running on full-throttle you find nearly untouched slopes and faces. Enough dry powder to cut some nice lines into the snow without any contact! Very cold above 2000m. With the next dump on thursday the ski resort is really ready to open at the beginning of december! :-) http://cdn.wepowder.nl/forum/1/15046.jpg?width=800 http://cdn.wepowder.nl/forum/1/15047.jpg?width=800 http://cdn.wepowder.nl/forum/1/15048.jpg?width=800 http://cdn.wepowder.nl/forum/1/15049.jpg?width=800

Indeed. On Sunday it was still dumping quite heavily close to Oberstdorf. Here’s a short video edit:
