It’s April, but it feels like winter. It will be cold this week, it will snow from time to time, there’s some room for the sun and there still are some lifts open in the Alps. The temperature drops!

The temperature is dropping since Thursday. It was around 20 degrees in Engelberg on Thursday, but this morning the temperature has not been above zero degrees Celsius. That’s a temperature drop of 20 degrees. What a huge difference!

And it will remain cold this week. Check out the chart for the northwest of the Alps below. It will be around 5-8 degrees too cold for the time of year the next couple of days. Higher temperatures will only attempt to make a comeback by the end of the month.

Lots of freshies already

It’s snowing in the Alps since Saturday. At the start it was still pretty warm and most of the precipitation was caused by the ‘stau’ on the south side of the Alps. But as announced, the temperature started dropping from the north on Saturday and winter made its comeback.

More snow coming down especially on Tuesday

It’s snowing heavily on the north side of the Alps since Saturday night and because of the unstable air it will continue to snow today. The snow is dry and cold. The wind is quite strong on the highest peaks from time to time, but mid-mountain the wind has less influence on the snow. The visibility isn’t that good, but you can ride powder on the slopes.

It remains unstable on the north side of the Alps on Monday. You can expect snowfall with some sunny spells, but there are also resorts where the sun won’t shine at all. Chances for sunshine are a bit higher on Tuesday, but a new front will kick in and will bring lots of snow in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.

There won’t be that much snowfall after Wednesday anymore and the sun will return. The temperatures will still be quite low, so Wednesday and Thursday might be the best days.

PowderAdvice

The resorts in the northern French Alps, the resorts in the west and northwest of Switzerland, the higher regions in Vorarlberg and the glaciers in Austria are good options the next couple of days. Especially the resorts that aren’t situated in the main alpine ridge, but just north of west of it will be really good. Expect clouds and snowfall during the weekend and some more sunshine after the weekend. Think of resorts like Chamonix, Val Thorens, Engelberg and Sölden where the conditions will be good. This just might the last lift-assisted powder of the season! Thanks for booking your accommodation with this link!

Stay stoked, Morris
