Skier dies in avalanche in Obergurgl today...

Terrible news today from Obergurgl (Austria), where a Dutchman died in an avalanche. That happened around 1 pm in the Ferwalltal, a popular valley for ski touring.

Backcountry touring

According to the first information, the group consisted of ten people and they were on a tour. While skinning up they got caught by an avalanche at around 3000 meters and several people got buried. At least one of them was completely buried. Two skiers managed to stay out of the avalanche and started the rescue.

Heavily injured

According to police one person could not be resuscitated anymore. Another skier has been flown (severely wounded) to the hospital in Innsbruck. Our thoughts go out to family and friends of the victim. You can find more information here.

Update: ORF reports that not one, but two skiers have been taken to the hospital in Innsbruck. They are both heavily injured.
