Exposition

Kals-Matrei is located at the southern foot of the Grossglockner, the highest mountain of Austria. Snow therefore has to come form southern directions and travels a long way over many mountain tops before it reaches Kals and Matrei. This means a lot of the snow has landed on one of mountain tops on the way. An advantage is that Kals-Matrei is located so inner alpine that the snow stay fresh for a long time. On top of this most of the slopes have a northern component and the o so loved lariksen you find make you stay here for days after the dump/

With bad weather

These are the southern Alps and also quite inner alpine which causes the snow layers to never really get fat in the lower regions. Because of this do not suddenly dive down below the Goldried I. Around the Goldried II there are plenty of trees for orientation on days that it dumps and it does not get really steep. Ideal for beginning free riders. Do you like it steeper during a dump, go to St. Jakob im Defereggental.
