If the Swiss weather guys and girls start talking about a 'Südstau' this is the place to be (amongst others). San Bernadino lies at the foot of the eponymous tunnel and mountain pass, the connection to the Northern Alpine Ridge. If you've ever driven from Bellinzona to San Bernadino you'll understand how the snow can come down as fast as it does. From Mesocco you'll climb from 800 meters to 1700 in no time at all. The fronts coming in from the South have to do the same, making them drop their temperatures and snow quickly. Because of this the snowline is easily 300 to 500 meters lower than you'd expect from the weather data. But if, after snowfall, a cold front comes along with (mind you… WITH) a strong, cold wind from the North West there's a fair chance that most of the snow above the middle station has been blown away before you get there. But again: if there's snow this is the place to be. Be sure to check to see if the lifts are running. They're not too fast here.

With bad weather

Coming up from the valley in the gondola you'll see a lot of forests, but they're protected by wildschutz. Forget them and instead dive into the forests on the skiers right side of San Bernadino's only black slope.
