Serre Che lies East of the Parc National des Ecrins. The nearby city of Briancon prides itself on the number of solar days and it must be said: it seems that the air is nowhere bluer than over here. And yet there is often snow. When from October on the sun becomes less powerful and cold air manages to penetrate from the Mediterranean, things can go crazy around here. An important condition is that the snow has to come from a south to west direction. Then it will snow abundantly, but when the mistral blows for a few days, you may assume many summits will be blown naked by these cold winds. Be aware that after snowfall from the west a cold front will bring cold winds and lots of snow will be blown away and generate severe avalanche danger. Until the beginning of March you can enjoy the microclimate in Le Monetier-les-Bains, but after that spring will take over with often some cold and a snow dump.

With bad weather

Endless forests full of larches can be found between Briancon en Le Monêtier-les-Bains. Here, you can ride always.

Bon enneigement mais suis aux différences de température les randos deviennent de plus en plus dur et ça secoue un peu les chaussettes.

So definitely envious of our friends in northern Alps...all the snow there and crazy winds here, (kinda reminds me of winter '13 -'14 but inverted). That said...searched and found first tracks off of Tête du Grand Pré (northern entrance). Was quite the jont but worth it!

(Sorry 'bout last photo). Serre Che is in dire need of snow. Right up to the peaks the rain and wind seriously affected conditions. After FRing all important lines yesterday I could only find a nice, deep yet sugary 'powder' in the trees around 1900m east-north-east slopes. WATCH-OUT...any new cold snow are goin to make conditions super dangerous. Without any southern storms so far conditions are desperate, on and off-piste I hate to say :-(
