Exposition

Val Cenis is located at the foot of the Col du Mont Cenis in the Haute Maurienne. The Col du Mont Cenis is the watershed between the French Alps in the west, and the Piemonte in the east. Snow from the east hardly ever reaches this area, although the strongest retour d’est always accounts for some snow on the peaks, especially in the early and late winter. In the middle of the winter, storms should come directly from the west, because Val Cenis is an inneralpine area and all snow from the northwest to north is blocked by dozens of three-thousanders. It won’t surprise you that the area has a microclimate throughout the winter which causes very low temperatures. From March on, weather fronts from the west can reach the area again. If there’s now significant snow in the early winter, this is not the place to go.

With bad weather

Fantastic treeruns are possible here. Unfortunately, more and more of these great forests full of larches are declared off-limits due to wildschutz.
