On the border between the French north Alps and the French south Alps lies Valloire/Valmenier. On your way up you take the Col de Télégraphe, famous from the Tour de France, which ends before a closed gate at the end of the village Valloire. In summer you can continue here toward the Galibier. In winter this is a great place for touring. Snow comes from the west to northwest. The combination of the Galibier and Ecrins blocks all snow from the south. Even though humid air flows in from the southwest during warm fronts, this rarely leads to intense precipitation. Over here snow comes from the west. Period.

With bad weather

Skiers-left and skiers-right of the Setaz lift you find the best sheltered lines of the Valloire. Higher up everything is bare. Between Valloire and Valmenier you can also go to the Grandes Drozes lift. Next to that the real northface of Valmenier also offers some nice lines through the forest, but save those till the visibility is good and the snow has stabilised.
