Mild and unstable weather in the Alps

Von meteomorris an 12 April 2016 · 0

Spring made its appearance in the Alps, but because warm and cold air aren't that far apart, it is also unstable. There's some precipitation from time to time, with a snow line between 1500 and 2100 meters. The freezing level is higher and varies between 1900 and 2400 meters. The picture below says it all. The lines at the top of the graph respresent the temperature at 1400 meters, which is well above the long year average (the red line). The collection of spikes at the bottom of the graph is the precipitation and that aggregation is even more exciting. The result is mild and unstable weather in the Alps.

More and more resorts are closing their lifts but most major ski resorts are still open until the end of April and we still have at least 4 weeks to go before Val Thorens will close its lifts. And the lifts in Engelberg will run even longer. There are still plenty of chances of riding some powder, but it's not going to happen the next couple of days. Anyway, if you are traveling to the Alps the next couple of days and you want to support wePowder and this forecast, book your accommodation using this link. We receive a small percentage of every booking made through this link and this helps us a lot to improve wePowder and advice you even better. Thanks in advance! In this forecast:

  • Mild and unstable
  • Best chances in the high alpine in Switzerland
  • Lower temperaturs later this month?

Mild and unstable

Mild and unstable air from the south is moving to the Alps thanks to a predominant current from the southwest. Cold air might reach the Alps from time to time, but it won't be anything special. In such conditions, the snow mostly comes down in the evening and at night. This might result in a suprise for the mornings. Choose those areas that are at high altitude, because obviously the snow will be the best. If you choose a resort with a glacier, hire a mountain guide. Although the snow is now at its thickest, but snow bridges and crevasses are difficult to see for a layman.

Best chances in the high alpine in Switzerland

Due to the supply of warm air from the south and the mild temperatures, your best chance of snow will be in the high alpine in Switzerland. Unstable weather can be quite mysterious and the snowfall might differ from peak to peak, but Switzerland will be your best bet with this current from the southwest.

Lower temperaturs later this month?

The models show a probability that it will get colder in the Alps by the end of next week. That's still very far away, but a bright spot in your hunt for the last powder this winter.

Stay stoked! Morris
