Powder Alert #8 in sight?

Von meteomorris an 24 Januar 2020 · 5

After heavy snow for the Pyrenees, there finally seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel for the Alps. Since 36 hours the model runs have been way more positive than they were at the beginning of this week. Okay, the details are still pretty uncentain but these runs will certainly feed our stoke! In this article:

  • models finally see some light at the end of the tunnel
  • this weekend: ride powder in the Pyrenees

Models finally see some light at the end of the tunnel

For a while there has been a snow event on the weather charts that might take place around the 29th of January. It disappeared suddenly earlier this week, but is back in the runs since the last 36 hours. Between January 28 and January 30, the jet stream seems to track more south than was predicted in earlier calculations with as a result significant snowfall for the French Northern Alps and western Switzerland. We might even get a north-west stau situation with snow for the entire Northwest, including the Arlberg.

If everything comes together a powder alert would be then in effect from Thursday 30 January. All models agree in this scenario. Something that has been different in recent weeks.

I will try to give you a more detailed forecast this weekend. But it might be a good idea to block your agenda as of Thursday and make sure you have your gear ready.

This weekend: ride powder in the Pyrenees

If you can't take it anymore and your stoke levels are to high then you should drive south for tapas and powder. A lot of snow fell in the eastern Pyrenees earlier this week and the last two nights were without clouds which enabled the snow pack to radiate. As a result the snow could loose some of its mositure and is lighter than during the snow falls. A weak front will track towards the Pyrenees this weekend with some extra cm of freshies. Especially on the southern side of the Pyrenees. Snow limit will be around 1500-1700 meters. Visibility will not be as good as today (friday), but it is currently the best destination in Europe.

Snow research in Canada

Meanwhile, I am with a group of over 40 freeriders on a quest for powder in Canada. Snow pack is really thick overhere and in interior British Columbia they have one of the better winters of the last 15 years (source). Earlier this week we were already in Red Mountain (click here for more words and images) and Whitewater (check our trip report here) with wonderful conditions. Today we ended up in Revelstoke. Skibum town number 1 of Canada. We had some fresh snow (again) overnight which ensures that today will be a good day (again).

I wanted to do the Revy/kicking horse combo but chose the “safe” resort as far as travel ease in Whistler. Big mistake.

Hi meteomorris, according to the maps the next storm is only a couple of days away. When will we have an updated analysis from you?

We're flying in to the Alps next week but waiting for your advise on when and where to go.

    Thanks!
