This weekend HIGH danger of avalanches.
This weekend HIGH danger of avalanches.

HIGH to VERY HIGH danger of avalanches, another 20-60 cm of freshies and the Nordstau is coming.

Current conditions, friday february the 7th

What a winter start. Finally the whole Alps are covered with a good baselayer. Only exception is the Pongau region where the base is still very thin. And as the French mentioned today. Les conditions d’enneigement sont excellentes pour un début décembre, pour ne pas dire presque exceptionnelles!

But beware. Avalanche conditions became tricky. In large parts of Switzerland and France the danger of avalanches went up to high. Even up to very high for theSavoie. And so the French advice you to stay on piste the next few days; Soyez prudent pour toute sortie hors piste ce week-end. If you go out, check your local avalanche bulletin en plan your day carefully.

Short term

Storm Karin is tracking South today (Friday). It is a small but active storm the will pass the Alps wthin 24 hours. You may expect another 30-60 cm of fresh (windblown) powder in the French Alps. Switzerland and western Austria will see an additional 10-30 cm vers. After Karin has left it will become sunny on Saturday. As will Sunday. Although they migt see some flurries in Austria already sinday afternoon. The start of the Nordstau.

Long term

Finally a dump for the Northern Alps. We will see a Nordstau from Monday till Wednesday. I expect an average of 15-30 cm, but near snowmagnets like the Arlberg en the Dachstein this can easy go up to 40-60 cm. What will happen after Wednesday is still unclear.

Stay stoked
