Might we seen this after the dump?
Might we seen this after the dump?

A real Nordstau. We updated the status already to MEGAdump. We might see up to 70-100 cm of fresh powder at the Dachstein, the Northern Alps of the Salzburgerland, the Hohe Tauern and Eastern Tirol on Sunday morning. Snowlevels will be around 800 till 1300 meters depending on the type of mountain and the intensity of the snowfalls.

Be aware that although the avalanche danger is only 1 or 2 at the moment, it will go up rapidly towards 4 (high) in the next few days. Check daily your local avalanche bulletin and follow us on Powfinder, Facebook and Twitter for extra updates in case the situation might get serious.

Alarm code orange

The majority of weather websites in Austria and even the national weather service ZAMG have come up with a winter weather warning code Orange. From Friday till Sunday Eastern Tirol there will be stormy winds and loads of rain and snow above 1200 meters in the Salzburgerland, southern Niederosterreich and NorthernSteiermark. Even the avalanche warning services are paying extra attention on the days to come.

The first clouds moved in on Thursday and in between Flumserberg and Hochkar we saw already 5-10 cm fresh at the time of writing (Wednesday 23.51) Snowlevels are around 1700 meters in the west and 1100 meters in the east.

Short term

Today (Friday) and especcially Saturday we will see intense snowfalls. Snowlevels will be around 1700 meters in Eastern Switzerland, between 1100 and 1400 meter in Eastren Tirol (Fieberbrunn, Achensee, Zillertal) and between 900 and 1200 meters at the Salzburgerland and Steiermark.

2 years ago the sitaution was almost the same. Some footage from those days.

The biggest dump we will see on Saturday. I do expect 70-100 cm of fresh powder above 1800 meters in Eastern Tirol, the Dachstein, the Northern Alps of the Salzburgerland and the Hohe Tauern. The amounts of fresh snow will be way smaller and snowlevels will be significantly higher in Tirol, Voralberg and Eastern Switzerland). Some hints for the days to come. The treeruns of for example Zauchensee, Hochkar, Hinterstoder, Tauplitz or Hochkonig will be in great shape in between 1500 till 2000 meters. Of course you can also make your own filter through this link.

At that time it's already dry and warm in the western and southern Alps.

Long term

Due to an upcoming high pressure area it will get dry after Sunday. This means sunny days and cold nights. The snow has some time to settle and gives you the opportunity to use your skins and score some powder. But there is big chnce that powderalert#13 will be on as from Thursday next week. And it looks like it will be for the east again!

The treeruns Zauchensee, Hochkar, Hinterstoder, Tauplitz or Hochkonig on Friday and Saturday. Sunday we will see the latest flurries and especcially north faces above 1800 meters will be in shape with an additional 50 cm of powder on Sunday afternoon and Monday . Go East, go Explore!

Stay stoked
