PA#21: Double bang

Powder is coming! It’s basicly gonna be like this the next couple of days:

  • Wednesday morning: First chair in the northstau regions of the Salzburgerland, Steiermark and Niederösterreich. Resorts like Hochkar, Hinterstoder, Tauplitz. Loser, Krippenstein, Lofer and Fieberbrunn can expect around 15-35 centimeters of freshies. The other regions of the northern Alps can expect 5-15 centimeters. The avalanche danger will probably be three out of five (check your local avalanche bulletin!).

  • Thursday morning: First chair again in the northstau regions of the Salzburgerland, Steiermark and Niederösterreich. The snowcover in the southern Alps is growing later in the day.

  • Friday morning: First chair in the Italian Piemonte, Lombardia and Süd-Tirol. You can expect 20-50 centimeter of freshies.

  • Saturday and Sunday: First chair in the French southern Alps?

Current

There are still some clouds in the eastern regions of the Austrian Alps today. It’s sunny in other regions of the Alps and you’ll have to search for powder in the western and southern regions. Most of the powder close to the lifts is pretty much tracked, so you’ll have to start hiking for nice lines. The peaks will see some sun, clouds in the eastern Alps

Tuesday is starting with sunshine everywhere, but some clouds will come in from the north later in the day that will hit the eastern Alps. This will be a perfect champaign powder day in resorts like Hochkar, Hinterstoder, Tauplitz. Loser, Krippenstein, Lofer and Fieberbrunn.

The snow will hit the southern Alps on Wednesday. You can expect dropping temperatures and cold snow. It will keep on snowing in the southern Alps from Wednesday till Friday. I expect around 20-50 centimeters in the Piemonte, Lombardia and Süd-Tirol. The shift of snowfall from the northern to the southern Alps is marking an important change in the position of high and low pressure areas in Europe. The high pressure areas will be dominating the northern Alps and the low pressure areas will determine the weather in the Mediterranean from Wednesday.High pressure north of the Alps and low pressure south of the Alps

This new status quo will result in snow for the southern Alps. This the case in the French southern Alps on Friday and this will expand into the other regions of the southern Alps later in the weekend.

This situation seems to hold for quite a while, with more snow coming up for the southern Alps. And not just there. If you’re up for an exotic roadtrip you might want to hit hit the Pyrenees, the Italian Abruzzo, Greece, the Balkan countries and Romenia. This winter is not over yet!
