After Season Alert

What? A PowderAlert? Are we kidding? If you are a true powder addict and you just can’t let go of winter, this is an after season alert for you. But keep in mind, we call it an after season alert for a reason. A lot of snow will fall in the higher alpine, but only the lifts on the glaciers of Zermatt, Diavolezza (St. Moritz), Engelberg, Kaprun, Stubai, Hintertux, Les Deux Alpes, Tignes and the Kaunertal are open. All the lifts in the ‘regular’ resorts are closed.

But hey, it’s a long weekend with Monday off, snow will fall, and why not ride some powder? A great opportunity to say goodbye to winter in a proper way. If you’re going out there or not. The tension of a PowderAlert, the last one of the season. Check out the webcams at home or get out there!

The temperature will drop rapidly between Friday May 17th and Sunday May 19th. Especially in the Swiss main alpine ridge and the northern alpine ridge the freezing level will drop to 2000 meters and that might be lower temporarily. The Monte Rosa area will get a lot of freshies. The further east you’ll go, the less snow will fall.

You can expect a meter of freshies in the resorts that still have their lifts open in Switzerland. Locally this might be even more. But…..only the lifts on the glacier are open, so when you go into the backcountry you’ll enter an area with lots (and we mean lots) of crevasses. Keep in mind that the sun is really strong, and the snow will be cold for only a couple of hours. And you’ll need to have your timing right. The last calculations show that it will be a game between precipitation and sunshine.

Lots of reason not to go out there. But…when it all comes together and the sun is coming out….hey, why not? Stay on the slopes, and get your faceshots in May!

Stay stoked
