Kick the Vik

In 2008 Markus Boss started a small event at the SAC hut Maighels in Graubünden, Switzerland. This season the event has grown to become the Eco Freeride Tour. There are three stops this year: in Val Senales, Bergün and Disentis/Sedrun.

Full of action but with a love for nature!

Everything done with our own – human – resources. No avalanche detonations, helicopters or other motorised transport; with these ecological principles the EFT has pioneered a new kind of freeride event. The concept has paid off. This year's expansion reflects the demand for this kind of event. On average an event lasts three days. The participants meet on Friday and hike up to the mountain hut. The difficulty of this hike varies between locations. While the hut in the Val Senales can be reached directly from the resort, athletes need to overcome 400m of altitude difference to get to the Maighels hut near Sedrun. Or even 1000m for the Kesch hut. On one of the three days a freeride contest is held on a predetermined mountain. The participants choose their personal lines and draw them on the mountain in their own creative interpretations of the contest face. The winners are chosen the same evening at the hut in a riders' voting using video shot at the event. The contest is held in men's and women's categories as well as being divided into Ski/Telemark and Snowboard. Each stop is a stand-alone event and participants don't need to sign on for the whole tour.

Nature

Even though the contest ist the central focus of each tour stop the experience out in nature and the time spent

together in good company in and around the mountain hut are also an important part of the EFT concept. The EFT

offers a platform for similarly minded people to meet up, share their stories and stoke. To discover new regions meet

new friends. Since there are inherent risks in the sport of freeriding participants get briefed about the current dangers

by qualified mountain guides and standard avalanche equipment is made mandatory. There is also the possibility of

practicing avalanche rescue scenarios in the group under the expert tuition of the mountain guides in each tour stop.

Tour stops 2014

When choosing potential tour stops the EFT doesn't only look out for good contest faces. Due to the small nature of

the events it's much more important that the mountain huts can be accessed, even at higher avalanche risks and that

there are good, less-inclined possibilities for riding in the area. Otherwise the risk of having to cancel an event would

just be too high. The mountain huts don't have to offer many amenities. Primarily they just need to offer enough bunks

for sleeping.
