The north stau is up and running and causes it to snow till deep into the Steiermark region. In the southern Alps on the other hand it’s sunny and windy as hell. The image below clearly shows the difference!

It’s sunny and dry at the Weissensee, but it’s snowing in the Kleinwalsertal. That big are the differences at the moment.

The snow line is dropping rapidly and it’s at 1200 meters in Gerlos at the moment. I expect the snow line to drop the next 12 hours to around 500 meters (in some locations).

Update of 22/10 8.59 Snow in Airolo en Zermatt
The front is that powerful that it’s even snowing in Airolo, south of the Gotthard tunnel. They even got some snow in Zermatt (the village, not that mountain in Zermatt we can’t remember the name of ;) ). The wind on the peaks however is strong and blows away all the snow. The live webcam images from the Rothorn say it all.

The most snow came down in the Swiss Gotthard region and the Glanerland since last night. The wheater stations are showing 38 centimeters of freshies. Even in Airolo (south of the main alpine ridge) around 14 centimeters came down at 900 meter altitude (source: SLF).

Update from 22/10 6.31 uur
Some weatherman say it’s going to be a cold winter, but the snow that comes down in the Alps at the moment will only make it to ski season in the higher alpine. Simply because it’s still too warm. The maps are showing a rise of temperature for the weekend. But you never know what the impact of all that snowfall will be on the snowmaps.
Update from 22/10 5.45 uur
Nothing as nice as a good dump! And snow will come down in the Alps today. Meteoalarm turned yellow, orange and red the last 24 hours and the Austrian weather service ZAMG opened their weather model INCA for everybody because of this situation.
The second avalanche bulletin of the season was published. Warnings for heavy wind and lots of snow. Especially in the eastern regions the avalanche danger is three (but a thick three), because of 100 centimeters of snowfall. Around 30-60 centimeters of snow are expected for Austria and Switzerland (locally even 100 centimeters and more).
