The Glacier Alert: day 2
Kleinwalsertal this morning
Kleinwalsertal this morning

We’ll proceed in this article where we ended yesterday. The storm isn’t that strong anymore in the Alps and it’s time to have a look at the conditions at the moment. How much snow came down? Are the any lifts open? Where can you find the best conditions? We’ll post updates all day! And your help is more than welcome. Post you pictures, live reports, links, powdersprays and everything else you think is relevant in the comments of this article. This will give you a good overview of the dump and we’re helping the riders that are on their way to the Alps with relevant information. Thanks!

23 October 16.32 Kitzbühel will open as well!

The lifts at the Pass Thurn will also open this weekend. Together with Planai, Kitzbühel is the first resort without a glacier to open its lifts.

23 October 15.14 Planai will open its lifts as the first resort without a glacier

It’s almost a tradition that the Planai will open its lifts as the first resort without a glacier. Normally with artificial snow, but now with loads of powder! Planai will open its lifts this this weekend.Planai! Open this weekend

23 October 15.11 First wePowder tracks in the Alps!

Dutch rider Ivar (Ieism) and his buddy have the honour to ride the first wePowder turns in the Alps this season. ‘Snow is really heavy in the valley, but there’s at least 70 centimeters in Hintertux. It’s going to be interesting tomorrow.’ Winter has started!

23 October 12.31 Trees come down because of the snow

wePowder member Berber Semmelink posted the pictures below from the Salzburgerland. ‘Yeah, it’s a lot of snow! The first 10 centimeters of snow are really dry. There’s lots of damages to the trees because of the storm and the heavy snow. The temperature at the moment at 1000 meter is around zero degrees.’

23 October 12.20 Are you going to the glacier? Watch out!

It looks really appealing all those freshies, but watch out! Only the glacier areas are open and I like to repeat my words from a few days ago: This is the first significant dump for the northern Alps. There is no base at all and even on the glaciers the snow is scarce. This is a low pressure area that will pass rapidly, with lots of wind and a high pressure area right after it. Let’s put it in a simple way: this is a dump to get stoked and maybe for some first powder turns on the slopes on one of the glaciers in Austria. So if you go: stay on the slopes! Crevasses are waiting for you just outside the marked runs. And if words don’t reach you, check out the image below.Hintertux a couple of days ago

23 October 9.40 Status glaciers

The glaciers in Austria are closed at the moment. The forecasted snow came down big time (and is still falling), but it’s also clear that the wind influenced the snow cover heavily. The sun will come out tomorrow morning and it’s going to be busy when the lifts open. The first lifts might even open today, because everybody is working hard to open the lifts as soon as possible. Some images from the mountains.Hintertux, 70 cm of freshies

23 October 9:39 It will snow today in the east of Tirol and the Salzburgerland

It will remain cloudy in the east today and it will snow from time to time. You can expect another 15-40 centimeters today.Another 15-40 cm of freshies

23 October 9:17 100 centimeters of freshies in Voralberg!

This in unreal. After Tirol and the SLF the avalanche service if the Vorarlberg publishes its first avalanche bulletin of the winter. And that’s pretty special. The the title says it all: Sonderinformation des Lawinenwarndienstes von Donnerstag, 23.10. We can read the following: Insgesamt fielen dabei an den automat. Messstationen des Lawinenwarndienstes bis heute Morgen in höheren Lagen der nördlichen Regionen 80 bis 100 cm, im Rätikon und in der Silvretta 50 bis 80 cm Neuschnee - lokal auch mehr.Voralberg this morning

23 October 8.46 hour: 40-70 centimeter of freshies in the east of Switzerland

Our weather maps were right. Around 40-70 centimeters of freshies came down in the eastern parts of Switzerland. The most snow came down around Engelberg, the Glanerland (with resorts like Elm and Braunwald) and the east of Graubünden (with resorts like Davos and Arosa). Ski patrol got their first powder turn in Elm today (check out the image below).Snowfall in the eastern regions of Switzerland the last 36 hours (number on the right)
