On November 3, the big question was: will the triple bang bring 5 meter of snow? Now 10 days later we are at 496 centimeters of freshies. Please note, that’s in 10 days time. But the snow line could be found at high altitude (as expected regular high), so most of the precipitation came down as snow in the higher alpine. We can find a closed snow cover in large parts of the main alpine ridge and in the southern Alps above 2000 meters. That closed snow cover is around 1 to 2,5 meters thick. At higher altitudes in places like the Mont Viso, the Gotthard, the Monte Rosa and the northern alpine ridge you can already find a base of 400 centimeters. Is that a great start of the season for the higher alpine or what?
Green valleys
The valleys are still green and that’s not so strange at this time of year. Snow deep into the valleys never makes until winter. It’s great for the stoke, but in the end, this kind of snow doesn’t have any value. the rule until winter. It would be nice pose for pictures but we do not have much going on. The huge amounts of snow in the mountains will definitely make it into winter, but the differences are striking between the north and south side of the Alps. Not only in terms of snow cover, but especially regarding the snow line.
Looking at the higher alpine, then there is a lot of snow. Especially on the south side of the Alps it’s pretty nice at the moment and the top lifts could already open. But the beautiful weather won’t last for long.
More snow for the higher alpine
The weather in the weekend starts really bad. There will be snow from the south again, but the northern Alps will profit a little bit. There will be a southern Stau on Friday evening and Saturday morning, but cold air and snow will come in from the (north)west during the day. Sunday will be colder with some clouds, some sun and still some freshies.

The good news is that it will be colder for a while and in the next 72 hours we can expect 20-70 centimeters of snowfall. The weather will be pretty calm during the weekend. And after that? Low pressure areas? High pressure areas? Anyway, there’s plenty of snow to drive to the Alps with the next dump.
