It snowed, there is snow and there are lifts open? Where to go this weekend? A quick tour through the webcams and automatic monitoring stations illustrates beautifully where it has snowed. It also shows that the forecast for this weekend gives a good impression where it will snow. In brief below my findings, then the recommendations for next weekend and I'll conclude with a forecast for the week after.

It has snowed!

Yes, I'm a weather man, but sometimes I'm not exactly right. It was not the Piedmont that had to deal with the most snow, but the Dolomites, East Tyrol and Carinthia got the most amount of freshies. This was caused by a low pressure area that lingered in the east of the Po Valley and mingled there with the incoming cold air from eastern Europe. The result was a snow line that went up to the 1200 meters and brought 20-65 centimeters of fresh snow.

Less snow came down in the western part of the Piedmont and the snow line could be found a lot higher. No freshies till deep in the valleys like the Dolomites. Striking was the sharp boundary between freshies and no frshies. The Diavolezza in the Engadin got a lot of fresh snow and it remained almost dry on the Corviglia. A great indication of how important the role of the main alpine ridge is and how big the differences are. Some images.

Dolomites

The snowline goes up to 1200 meters and 20-50 centimeters and locally even 65 centimeters of freshies. Winter is ON here! Great images and it will keep on snowing for a while.

Karinthie (Nassfeld)

Lots of snow can be found around the Nassfeldpas. Especially around the Kärntischer Alpine ridge it snowed heavily.

Piemonte north (Monte Rosa)

Great images again from Gressoney. The snowline can be found around 1700 meters. Below 1700 meters there's no snow to be found.

A lovely morning

Piemonte west (Sestrière)

High snowline and some freshies. Below 2000 meters wet snow and rain.

Wet snow or rain below 2000 meters

Great conditions at the moment can be found in the southern Alps. The question is....is there more snow coming? Yes, there's more snow coming, but this this time in the western and southern Piemonte.

Snowfall this weekend

Most freshies can be found in the west of the Po-valley this weekend. You can expect 15-50 centimeters of freshies on Saturday, where the snow line drops to 1100 meters and the conditions will improve rapidly below 2200 meters. Especially when the sun comes out on Sunday. That just might be an awesome day in the resorts in this region.

Meanwhile, there are some freshies coming down in the northwest of the Alps. A weak front brings 2-15 centimeters of snow. Nice for the webcams, but not very special. Although in the Vercors they might get more freshies and this could be just fine!

Where to go?

Freshies this weekend and the lifts are open. But which lifts? My tips for this weekend can be found below. If you're looking for accommodation click on the resort name that's between brackets and you immediately know where to go!

Long term?

Fresh snow from the northwest on Monday. The models already agreed on that. You can expect 5-15 cm of fresh snow, and the French Alps, the Swiss main alpine ridge, Voralberg and the stauregions of the Salzburgerland and Styria get around 20-40 centimeters.

But for the middle of next week, the situation is still uncertain. A high pressure area is lurking and could hold a second northwestern Stau at distance. More about that on Sunday. But first enjoy the powder that will come down next weekend.

Models don't agree for the period after Monday

Stay stoked!
