Let’s make a long story short: the conditions on the first day of the wePowder Season kick-off exceeded the expectations. When you enter the Ötztal you still feel like wearing shorts and this doesn’t really change until you reach Sölden. Fortunately, we had to drive a little bit further, to Obergurgl and Hochgurgl. And this is where the winter comes in. The village is white, but how good would it be on the mountain?

Great snow

Over 45 hungry freeriders were waiting for the Festkogelbahn to start working on Friday morning. Some warm-up runs first and six groups with only one goal: powder! The first field wasn’t that bad. Good snow, not too much, but the quality exceeded all expectations. And that small field was only the beginning. Our guide already explored the Ferwalltal the day before and that was pretty good. With only a short hike (around 20 minutes) we reached the top of the Festkogl (3038 meter) and that gave us access to some great couloirs.

Let’s hit it!

The choice of the route and the line were essential. There was a lot of drift snow due to the wind that has been blowing for days. We skied a couloir a little less steep. The real reward was a wide open powder field that ended on the ski-out. No sharks, great visibility and fantastic snow. Full throttle and big, long turns. We just couldn’t believe how good the snow was. Was this a descent full of powder in a winter where most resorts are craving for snow?

Last run

The afternoon was similar to the morning. Great lines, good snow and good company. We called it a day with a steep couloir on a face where a fall isn’t the best thing to do. Whát a start of the season kick-off!

The images speak for themselves. Thanks to Klaas, Bas, Luc, Heiko, Dirk, RP, Aimee and Jelle for an amazing day. And also the snowboarders had a great day. Well, if we have to believe the pictures from Morris!
