You could almost get used to it. Every week we hear the sad news that avalanches have demanded new victims. But how frequently the news comes to us in recent days, we’ll never get used to it.
Since Christmas, we warn actively that the snow cover is unstable. And especially Switzerland had a lot of fatalities last week. To give you some insight of where and when the deadly avalanches occurred, we have developed the map below. We also share the sheet with you in which we keep track of this season accidents, so we can all learn and hopefully ride safer.
The numbers
Below you’ll find the sheet with all the deadly accidents so far (and known). You will find successively the location, the date, the then current avalanche danger, altitude, exposition, steepness, the number of victims, what they were doing and a link to a news story.
Situation still unstable
If you’re going to the Alps the next couple of days, be alert. Check your local daily avalanche bulletin, make sure you have the right gear with you and that you have the right knowledge. No knowledge? Are you not sure? Say no to off-piste and wait for conditions to improve. The season is still long.
