Two people die in an avalanche in Chamonix

By meteomorris on 3 January 2016 · 0

An avalanche in Chamonix has taken the lives of two alpinists from Lithuania today. They triggered a slide near the ski area of Les Grands Montets today on the so-called La Petite Verte route. A group of three climbers triggered the slab avalanche. The avalanche is the result of the fresh snow in the last 36 hours. The fresh snow didn't bond well with the old base layer, came loose and dragged the climbers down. Avalanches already took the lives of eleven alpinists this season.

You'll have to be careful when you ride out of bounds the next couple of days. There's more snow coming and the wind and the weak base layer create a critical situation. Ride with the right knowledge when you decide to ride off-piste. No knowledge? Then go out with a mountain and ski guide.
