The eastern parts of Austria got some freshies yesterday and it will keep on snowing today and tomorrow east of Salzburg. The sun is coming out more to the west and it’s quite cold. It’s October, the sun is lower in the sky and winter is knocking on the door. Great news for the glaciers, because every flake that comes down now might make it till the end of the winter. The snow won’t stick around at lower altitudes.
There is still some snow coming down the next couple of days. The temperatures might go up on Thursday, but there’s a chance that it might snow again after Sunday. The mid-mountain ranges on the north side of the Alps might get some freshies.
TIP: Check out our detailed snow maps
A cold pit is going south from Scandinavia and this can provide some freshies from Sunday and the beginning of next week. Whether it is enough to make some first turns on an alpine meadow (on your old gear) is not quite sure. What is certain is that you can make some turns in fresh snow on the slopes of the Kitzsteinhorn and Hintertuxer glacier.
TIP: Get prepared for winter and start with Mountain Academy now
You can see how the cold pit (the little green circle on the right of the card) is coming down from the north and is heading to the Alps. It’s too early for details, but this just might mean it will snow again after the weekend.
Stay stoked, Morris
