Great conditions on the glaciers in Austria

Up to 40 centimeters of snow came down and if you check out the webcam images from today you’re definitely going to ask yourself the question: ‘so, why was I in the office today?’. Today was pretty good, but don’t forget it’s still October, so the winter still has to start!

In this forecast:

  • FreshSnow alert
  • Up to 40 cm of freshies
  • A bit more snow came down today
  • Southern Föhn will kick in this weekend

FreshSnow alert

Yep, not a PowderAlert but a FreshSnow alert. It’s still the beginning of the season and since you can only ride powder on the glaciers it’s not a good idea to send out a PowderAlert. The reason is simple. This is not a good time to ride powder off-piste on a glacier. There are many crevasses out there right now and the snow bridges are still weak in most cases. We don’t have the illusion that there will be less accidents, but it’s just sending out a signal. My advice: enjoy the fresh snow on the marked slopes or go out with a certified guide if you want to ride off-piste (even though I think they’ll disencourage you).

Up to 40 cm of freshies

It has been snowing in the eastern Alps since Wednesday and it was still snowing in the east of Austria this morning. Between 15-30 cm, locally even 40 cm, of snow came down, without any significant wind. Cold powder on the marked slopes of the glacier. Check out the picture below. It was cold today and the sun came out every now and then.

It was still cloudy and snowing a bit further to the east this morning.

There was no significant snowfall in the western Alps today. The temperatures are low enough to switch on the snow cannons in the Engadin.

A bit more snow came down today

It snowed a little bit in the east of Austria this morning, but the sun also came out in the afternoon.

Southern Föhn will kick in this weekend

The current will turn to the south this weekend thanks to a powerful storm off the coast of Portugal. That provides some snow on the southern side of the Alps and wind on the north side of the Alps, but after the weekend the temperature will rise. So the precipitation that will come down is only interesting for the high alpine (3000 meters and higher). But by the end of next week a northern current seems to emerge again which will bring some freshies again.

TIP: Check out our snowmaps for more details

Today was a good day on the Austrian glaciers and tomorrow will be pretty good as well. You can go out on Saturday and Sunday, but expect some more wind. This will get stronger during the weekend.

Stay stoked. Morris.
