Fresh snow: some tips where to go on a tour this weekend

The eastern part of Austria had some freshies the last couple of days. The temperature was low and there was no significant wind. The forecasted 40 cm of freshies fell on some places. It’s too early to ride powder on the glaciers (stay on the marked slopes there), but there’s also another option. Go out on a tour! Just like Sandra did last weekend at the Col Agnel on the border of France and Italy. I think she had a good day!

Where to ride some freshies this weekend? Without risking falling down a crevasse? It helps when the resorts has an alpine meadow as a base. You’ll reduce the risk to hit a shark (bad for your gear and you might get injured). You’ll find the resorts I’ve selected below. Criteria were the amount of snow that came down, easy access by car so you can start skinning straight away and the base of the area where you want to ride some pow. If you go out, make sure you have the right knowledge. If you don’t have the right gear and/or the right knowledge to make decision off-piste, hire a mountain guide.

Türracher Höhe (more info click here)

Probably the best bet for Friday and Saturday. Good altitude and plenty of slopes with alpine meadows as a base.

Katschberg (more info click here)

It’s not that steep, but you’ll start at 1600 meters altitude on the Katschbergpass and skin up the slope. Once you reach the top, you’ve got around of 400 meters vertical. They had almost 35 cm at the Katschberg and with a grassy surface this good be a good option.

Nassfeld (more info click here)

Start at the Nassfeldpass at almost 1500 meters and skin up on the slopes. There’s almost 35 cm of freshies and again a grassy surface.

Obertauern

You can drive up to 1700 meters by car. The village didn’t get much snow, but there’s around 50 centimeters of freshies on 2000 meter altitide. Watch out: the higher you get the bigger the chance you’ll hit a rock. Don’t skin up too high.
