First dump for the Pyrenees!

First dump for the Pyrenees!

Just like the Alps the Pyrenees will also get plenty of snow this weekend. It’s the first big dump of the season. You can expect 30-100 cm of snow the next couple of days which will arrive in the Pyrenees in two stages. You can hardly see any snow on the webcams right now, but that will be different in the beginning next week. A northern current will bring lots of snow!

In this forecast:

  • From warm to cold
  • First snow coming in this weekend
  • More snow arriving after the weekend
No snow yet at the Pic du Midi

From warm to cold

An Indian Summer still dictates the weather in the Pyrenees. It’s still sunny and there’s no sign of winter yet. But that will change. An active storm arrives at the continent by the end of this week. A warm wind from the south blows just east of this storm, while west of it cold air from the Arctic is traveling south.

This leads to a southern current which will start the first periode with snowfall.

First snow coming in this weekend

The first snow is in the forecast for this weekend. The warm air is still around and this causes the snow line to drop slowly from 2700 meters to 1800-2000 meters this weekend. You can see the snow line drop in the west first, but it will remain pretty high in Andorra, Porté Puymorens and Vielha. The snow will come in from the southwest, so most snow will come fown south of the main ridge. You can expect 10-30 cm of freshies at 2500 meters, but more snowfall higher up.

More snow arriving after the weekend

The temperature will drop during Sunday (but maybe even on Monday). The current will turn north and I expect lots of snowfall on the French side of the Pyrenees from Monday/Tuesday. The snow line will drop to 1000 meters or even lower. It will definitely snow this weekend, but the snow line will be the one to watch. More details later this week!

Stay stoked. Morris
