PA#1: Where to ride freshies the next couple of days?

BOOM, it’s early November and it is winter! Friday and Saturday will be great days in the Alps. If you have the time, than I would go to the Alps NOW, because the temperatures will rise after the weekend. Around 10-35 cm of freshies came down in the northwest of the Alps the last 24 hours and it will keep on snowing today. Get your gear together and enjoy some freshies! In this forecast:

  • Looking back
  • Up to 50 cm of freshies at 2100 meter
  • More freshies the next 24-48 hours
  • PowderAdvice for the weekend
  • Back to normal temperatures after the weekend

Looking back

Monday and Tuesday were great days. You could go out for a tour in many places. What about this great footage shot in the Engadin by Andrea Marangoni.

This could be you on Friday and Saturday. Powder is a choice! ;-).

Up to 50 cm of freshies at 2100 meter

It snows heavily in the northwest of the Alps and you can go out for a tour on an alpine meadow on Friday and Saturday. It’s all about earning your turns. You can find 20-50 cm of snow at 2000 meters and more snow will come down. The snow cover is growing rapidly below 2000 meters in the French northern Alps and the west of Switzerland. How much snow do you see on the roof of the chalets in La Rosière at 1850 meter? 30 cm? Or what about the valley station of La Balme in La Clusaz at 1200 meters altitude. 25 cm?

The measuring stations are showing great numbers. And there’s more snow on its way.

You’ll have to deal with wind above 2500 meters altitude and in the main alpine ridge. There already was a solid snow cover above 2200 meters and the wind and fresh snow will definitely result in some wind slabs. The first avalanche forecast for the Haute Savoie, Savoie and Switzerland have been published. Please read them carefully if you want to go out on a tour the next couple of days.

More freshies the next 24-48 hours

It will snow heavily in the French northern Alps and the west of Switzerland on Thursday and I expect another 25-50 cm of freshies at 2000-2200 meters altitude till tomorrow morning. The front will move to the east on Friday. This will result in less precipitation in the French Alps and the sun might come out every now and then. The snowfall will intensify in the east of Switzerland and Austria. I expect around 25-50 cm of freshies at 2000-2200 meters from today till Saturday morning. This could locally result in 70-100 cm of freshies. The sun will come out everywhere on Saturday morning.

PowderAdvice for the weekend

  • Friday: Tignes, Courchevel (only open on Friday with a free lift pass), Pitztal, Sölden and Stubai and maybe some touring in the French northern Alps, Switzerland and Austria.
  • Saturday: Go out for a tour on an alpine meadow in the morning. The lifts are open in Engelberg (Stand -Trübsee), Alpe d’Huez (DMC 1+2 and TMX Rifnel), Planai- Hochwürzen in Schladming and the resorts in this article.
  • Sunday: The snow is still good at the slopes of the glaciers and you could go out for a tour with the right knowledge. There will be a weak front present in the west with a rising snow line.

Please note: The temperatures will rise on Saturday. The instability of the snow cover will rapidly increase thanks to the rise in temperature and this leads to more avalanche activity.

Back to normal temperatures after the weekend

The temperature will rise again after the weekend and will end at the normal values for the time of year. Nothing to worry about, and it might even snow from time to time in the high alpine (or above 2000 meters).
