Where to ride this weekend (December 1st and 2nd)?

Riding fresh powder this weekend? As in: real snow and no artificial snow? It’s possible! It will not be as epic as last weekend, but Saturday will be a good day. In particular the French Southern Alps and the resorts on the south side of the main alpine ridge have benefited from the dumps of early November and of the snow that came down last week. Unfortunately, there was a powerful and mild Föhn on Thursday, but there are still options for Saturday. Especially on northern slopes the snow has been preserved well and there is still 10-20 cm of fresh snow in the forecast for the French southern Alps from Friday to Saturday. Read on, because the areas below have a good base layer and will get some fresh snow in the coming hours.

If you want to know what the weather forecast per area will be, just click on the name of the area below and you’ll find everything you need for this weekend. The weather forecast, webcams from the nearby resorts, an overview of the terrain and some great off-piste lines. Keep in mind that it is still early in the season, sometimes the snow cover is (too) thin and there are all kinds of alpine dangers (snowy branches, crevasses and of course avalanches).

Hautes Alpes in France

Montgenèvre and Serre Chevalier open their lifts for the first time this season this weekend. Yes, true story. Montgenèvre and Serre Che (Villeneuve and Chentemerle) will open. If you want to know all the details (forecast, freeride routes, slope angles etc) click on Serre Chevalier and Montgenèvre.

Other regions in the southern Alps

The areas that opened last weekend have a solid base and also can offer some entertainment. Certainly not as good as in Serre Che or Montgenèvre, but there’s a winter atmosphere and especially natural snow. From west to east the areas I think the conditions are okay:

Go for a tour

The resorts that opened last weekend are now pretty much tracked near the slopes, but if you want to go on a tour there’s a lot to discover. Both from the top lifts of the high-altitude resorts, but also from the higher mountain passes such as the Julier and Simplon in Switzerland, take the train to the Oberalppass, the Bernard between Switzerland and Italy and from the Col du Montgenèvre and the Lauteret, Saturday can be a good day to go on a tour.
