At the moment, it is already snowing well in the Western Alps and in Ticino and Lombardy in the Southern Alps (see the radar image below). Ticino with ski resorts like Bosco-Gurin will get lots of snow today. Within a few hours, this precipitation will also move further eastwards, bringing snowfall to the rest of the Southern Alps. Austria and eastern Switzerland are this morning under the influence of light föhn conditions. It can partly clear up during the early afternoon, but also here the snowfall follows in the course of the afternoon and evening.

Today, 30 to 50 centimetres of snow will fall on a large scale in the Southern Alps. Especially in Ticino and possibly as far as Adamello, up to 80 centimetres may fall. To the north of Meran, it’s might also snow more than half a metre higher up. Also in the Julian and Carnic Alps, more than half a metre could fall, but here the snowline will be a lot higher. In the Northern Alps, most of the snow will fall in the areas close to the Alpine main ridge. Further north, it will probably only be 20 to 30 centimetres of snow.

Dropping snowline

During the snowfall, the snowline may drop considerably. Initially, it will be around 1,500 metres in the southern Alps, but it will drop to 1,000 metres during the snowfall and even to 800 metres further north. The snowline in the Northern Alps will also drop below 1000 metres fairly quickly. East of the Dolomites the snow line will be a bit higher, in the Julian Alps even above 2000 metres. Tomorrow morning at the end of the snowfall, the snowline might drop below 1500 metres, but the large snow amounts will only be found from 2000 metres.

Increasing high-pressure influence

Tomorrow, it will snow a little more, especially in the Eastern Alps, but the intensity will decrease and slowly but surely it will clear up everywhere. A few snow showers still remain possible. In the night from Thursday to Friday, the depression will move further to the North-East, allowing the high pressure area west of Europe to move a bit. Friday and Saturday therefore seem to become two quiet days. Especially on Saturday the sun will be shining in more and more places.

nice to see that the snow is starting to fall. Let’s hope this will provide the first base coat for the season …
