Once again, red colours are appearing on our forecast and once again, the Piedmont will probably be affected. Is it already clear in November that it will be a retour d’Est winter?

Before (part of) the Alps make their way back to winter, the next two days will be mild. The jet stream is currently still too far north to cause wintry conditions in the Alps. A band of high pressure over the Alps ensures temperatures of up to 10 degrees at 1500 metres and a zero degree line above 3000 metres. As in the past few days, this high-pressure influence is causing inversion weather and thus low-hanging clouds in many valleys.

First snowfall

In the course of Sunday, an eastward-moving high pressure area over the Atlantic Ocean will provide a temporary northerly flow that will noticeably cool the weather. At the same time, a low-pressure core will develop over the Mediterranean Sea, which again will bring a lot of precipitation to this region. Once again, there also seems to be a heavy retour d’Est situation for Piemonte at the beginning of next week.

Another retour d’Est in Piedmont?

Slowly but surely, there is more to tell about the upcoming snowfall, but we still have to be careful about the snow amounts we can expect. Several models are already hinting at a new retour d’Est, but there is still some disagreement about the snowfall. The latest model calculations also regularly show a blockage above the Atlantic Ocean, which could make it snow later in the week in the western and northern Alps, but this also goes hand in hand with higher uncertainty. For now, the southern Alps seem to be the main beneficiaries. More details about this snowfall in the next weather report on Monday.
