Got a few boards now and posting my reviews of them here.
Shark Chuna- Gorgeous board. If not riding it, it's a piece of artwork for your wall. Great, snappy for tight turns. Slow in slushy snow. Base is wood, so find that it's not as fast as other boards. Nice 3d contour base makes turning snappy but still floaty. Bid fat nose keeps you above the snow. Has two mounting points for your leash which I find great. I like to use one closer to the nose with my grassroots retractable leash (like a retractable dog leash), I lock it and just let the board drag behind my while I hike. Stomp pad is grippy.
Grassroots Slasher - Super fun, great for more of a skateboarding vibe to go switch and has a floaty ride, softer board. Center mounted or tail mounted leash, nice for options. Grippy, squishy stomp pad feels nice under your feet.
Burton Backseat Driver - least amount of 3d shape, dunno why they put edges on this board, they don't do much. VERY fast base. Have not tried in deep powder yet. For shallow snow, don't love it, dropped me on my ass a lot.
ALADO Konvoi - Most amount of aggressive 3d contour. It wants to go straight and fast. Not great in thick wet packing snow, you want something with less contour for that. Very snappy aggressive turns, you change direction and it'll rocket in that direction. Not a 'sloppy' feel. It can be turned sideways and slowed down like a snowboard in shallow snow, because the 3d shape channels are so aggressive that it acts like an edge where as other boards in shallow snow will drop you on your ass like you're standing on a crazy carpet (their contours are less deep and a less aggressive base wave). Nice leash, centre mounted, not meant to be removed. Stomp pad is very thick and spongy with ridges on the outside of your feet to jam your feet against. You can use those to slightly hop the board around when needed. Shortest model I own. Crazzzzy light weight. Nice fast base.
Burton DIY throwback - Great control because of the handle. No 3d shape to the base. Like standing on a crazy carpet... But The rope really makes a difference. I would take this on trail hikes to go down hiking trails that are narrow, or tight narrow tree runs. No 3d base so if it didn't have the rope, it'd be hell to steer in shallow snow. Pretty fast base! Not bad for skating around trails. No leash or mountig points for one, you'd have to add your own.
Love 'em all for different reasons. For a cheap, get your feet wet and get excited ride, grab a burton DIY throwback and cut your own shape, then grab another board for bigger rips and hands free. The DIY throwback is still my go to for hiking around little trails.
Boots - vans standard MTE. Buy them 1 size bigger then your normal foot size. Use snowboard boot liners. Ski boot liners may even do, just find a cheap pair of boots, even used ones, just for their liners.
Have not yet ridden an ASMO - if you guys are reading this, hit me up!
The sense of accomplishment riding bindingless when you finish a run even if it's only 10 seconds is amazing.
Makes me feel like a kid again in my backyard tobogganing and riding a skateboard that we waxed the base of 🤪
