After a weekend of snowfall, the Alps and Pyrenees enter calmer waters. From the north, the influence of a strong high pressure area increases. It becomes increasingly stable and snowfall is limited.
High-over-Low
The Alps temporarily enter a high-over-low situation where the high-pressure area lies north of a low-pressure area and provides a blocking setting for central Europe. Atlantic low pressure systems do not reach the Alps and, with an easterly flow, it remains largely dry.
Apart from low stratus clouds and light snowfall, it will be sunny in more and more places. Especially later in the week, it becomes more stable and sunny. On the northern side of the Alps, it does get slightly milder in the process.
Some snow in Piedmont
Not everywhere is already sunny and dry in the Alps at the moment. In many valleys we see a dense deck of low clouds, but with the cool easterly wind over the Po Valley, some moist air is also pushed against the south-west Alps (Piedmont). No more than about 5 centimetres will fall. Tomorrow, the eastern areas in Austria will also get a dusting of snow with this easterly wind.
Thursday and Friday will also be mostly sunny and thus slightly milder in the Alps, but for the French southern Alps, some snow will follow from the southwest during Friday. According to current calculations, 5 to 15 centimetres seem possible, locally a bit more. Saturday during the day, this precipitation then moves towards the north-west Alps.
High-pressure weather also returns early next week. Especially on the western side it will warmer, which we can also see in the ensemble for Geneva. For now, we do not see any larger snowfall of significance until end of next week.
