The first snowfall seen from above

King Winter showed up for a short visit in the Alps last weekend. That resulted in a lot of snow (40cm+) in the Hohe Tauern in Austria and in the coldest night in August since 1998.

Cold and humid air was pressed against the Alps with a northwestern current, which resulted in snowfall in the night from Saturday to Sunday and on Sunday. It snowed heavily especially in the Austrian main alpine ridge. That looked like this from above.

When the sun came out on Monday, it was nice to see that the Austrian main alpine ridge was actually white. That was shown on the fantastic webcam images, but was also visible from the satellites. Those who look closely at the animation below from Monday 27th of August will see the white peaks in Austria. But what also immediately stands out is how quickly this snow melts again and how quickly the white colors disappear from the satellite images.

Forecast next couple of days

Colder air will move to the south at the end of this week (Thursday/Friday), but this time the cooling is clearly less intense. There is some snow above 2700 meters with a freezing level around 3500 meters between Thursday and Saturday.
