The west of the US is getting hammered since Monday. Lots of snow and heavy winds result in a dangerous layer of fresh snow. You’ll also find a dangerous layer of sugar snow in many places and that’s the receipe for a lot of trouble. The avalanche danger is very high in large parts of the west of the US. It’s not recommended to go out in the backcountry today. Check your local avalanche forecast and prepare yourself. Do you have no knowledge of avalanches or alpine dangers? Take care inbouds
You also have to take extra care when riding inbouds. Due to snow that came down the last couple of weeks treewells have been formed and a skier passed away yesterday in a treewell in Jackson Hole.

It is amusing how Washington and Oregon are left out of the headlines when there such deep snow and great skiing.

…except this bit of Christmas Cheer from the WSDOT Snoqualmie Pass weather records database - the period from December 18-24 set a record for most snowfall in any 7 day period on record, 284 cm or 112 inches! That’s an average of 16 inches/day. Also, December 2015 is now the snowiest December on record at the pass with 491 cm or 193.3 inches of snowfall, eclipsing December of 1968.
