Sunday morning a whole part of a mountain above Le Monêtier-les-Bains collapsed. Exactly the same face where another part of the mountain came down on September 17th. The debris avalanche thundered through a famous ice climbing route and along a regularly skied couloir. The debris eventually ended up on a very popular off-piste slope of Serre Chevalier in the Tabuc Valley.
Tabuc valley is prohibited for ski touring
The entire Tabuc valley is prohibited from 1900 meters until further notice. That is a pity for ski tourers at the moment, there are many beautiful ski tour lines that run up through this valley. When the ski area opens, off-piste skiers will also have to deal with this ban, as the avalanche came down above the famous Montagnolle descent. In that respect it is nice that the ski area was not yet open, because it is often very busy in this valley.
Permafrost disappears and mountains collapse
In recent years, these types of messages have become increasingly common. Due to global warming, permafrost is disappearing and the mountains are losing their foundation. Entire mountain faces collapse and sometimes even lifts become unstable.
