Nothing new under the sun. Chris already mentioned in his Sunday weather report about the dominant high-pressure system, bringing plenty of sunshine and, so far, relatively low temperatures. In the coming days, temperatures will rise slightly, but a trough could still bring a drop in temperatures and some fresh snow on Wednesday.

Some snow for Austria

The nights will remain cold due to clear skies, but today temperatures will rise a bit, especially at higher altitudes, making it feel noticeably milder. The sun will continue to shine brightly.

The trough (with the green colours) is bringing some snow to Austria (wxcharts).

A trough at higher altitudes, accompanied by a precipitation area, will move towards the Eastern Alps during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. The northern side of the Austrian Alps will experience snow on Wednesday.

It won’t be much: we’re talking about around 2 to 5 centimeters to the east of Innsbruck. In the eastern windward areas of Austria (e.g., Hochkar), snowfall could reach 10 to 15 centimeters. Due to the incoming cold air, the snowline will drop down to the valleys.

Back to high pressure

Afterwards, the high-pressure system will quickly regain control, and we shouldn’t expect any snow until the middle of next week. By then, the pressure distribution may become a bit flatter, but according to current model outputs, depressions will still remain far from the Alps, meaning not much change is expected. The calm and stable high-pressure weather could, therefore, persist for a while longer.

Bone dry until mid next week in the northwestern Alps (wetterzentrale)

The ensemble forecasts speak volumes. It will also remain fairly mild, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 8 degrees at 1500 meters.

Do you think there could still be good snow for the coming weekend e.g. in Val d’Isere or Ischgl to take two quite opposite locations? Obviously knowing it would require some touring, if any good snow.

You write that “5 to 8 degrees at 1500 meters” is expected, but when I check the forecast for most of dolomites it looks considerably colder?

Speaking of the Dolomites, I really hope there is a signal for a big storm soon!!!
