PA#16: N-O-R-T-H Stau!

Er zit een mooie bak sneeuw aan te komen, daarom voor de snelle lezers een samenvatting.

  • Tuesday was pretty good

  • Snow in the complete Alps on Wednesday, but especially in the northwest and the north

  • Continuous snowfall in the northern Stau regions on Thursday

  • Sunny on Friday, but later more snow in the northern Stau regions between Flumserberg and Dachstein

  • The last snowfall on Saturday

  • Sunny after that with spring time conditions

  • PowderAlert #16 will be the last one for a while. This weekend is a GO!

A new storm on Wednesday

A new storm is ready to hit the Alps on Wednesday. A low pressure area is coming down from the northwest and will end up south of the Dolomites. In its wake cold air will come in and it will snow deep into the valleys. It will snow in the northwest first and it will start to snow in the night to Thursday in the Northern Alps and later in the Dolomites. Wednesday will be gray, cold and it will snow (from Chambéry in France till the east of Austria). You can expect 10-30, locally even 40 centimeters of freshies. The sun will come out in the west on Thursday and you can ride some nice lines. The north of Austria and Switzerland will still have to deal with a northern Stau and the best thing to do over there is ride powder in the trees.

And after that: a northern Stau

In the wake of this storm a classic northern current is generated which will bring snow to the northern Alps. A northern Stau that will come in two stages. First it will snow until Thursday. We get some rest right after and then more snow will come down from Friday to Saturday. In my sharpened advice today the following regions have the best cards. It’s ON on Friday and it will be ON during the weekend with the snow that’s still to come. And therefore:

More finetuning later this week.

Go, go, goooo

According to the latest calculations, high pressure will take over and the sun will dominate. Great weather to go touring. If you want to ride some fresh powder then you should go out the next couple of days. The Alps won’t get that much of snow anymore for a while after the weekend.

Stay stoked

Hi
Could you tell us what a “stau” is ? I’m thinking about a big snowfall but maybe it’s more precise…
Thanks for your precious job ;-)
