PA #21: hold your horses
Andermatt yesterday
Andermatt yesterday

Around 35-60 cm of freshies came down in the Piemonte between Monday and Wednesday and you could ride some great powder. It pretty much exploded a bit in parts of the Dolomites. Out of nowhere, the low pressure area reactivated and pushed itself north through the Dolomites and the Hohe Tauern. It will stick around for today (but only short) and today and Saturday will be powder days. But the window is small again. Today it’s still snowing in the east of Austria and Saturday will be a great powder day in and around the Hohe Tauern. Especially since the last snow that will come down today will be quite cold because of the cold front that’s coming in from the north. Cold powder on top of some heavier powder, the best ingredients for a great powder day on Saturday.

Saturday is a powder day

Today and tomorrow will be a powder day in the Hohe Tauern (that’s south of Salzburg). You might find something in the other glacier resorts of Austria and in Andermatt on Saturday, when the sun comes out. But the most snow will be in and around the Hohe Tauern.

Small window

Because warm air is coming in on Sunday and the three days after Sunday won’t be that good. Or better … stay at home if you are not already in the Alps. There will be some precipitation in the northern Alps from Sunday through Tuesday, but it is too warm and the snow line will be very high. Only with the passage of a cold front on Tuesday the conditions will improve, so Wednesday might be a pretty good day to ride some powder in the northern Alps.

And thus we’ll have to wait for PA #21. It appears that the middle of next week it will be ON in the northern Alps. The European model is very positive with from Wednesday to far into the Easter weekend cold air and lots of snow. While the Americans also see precipitation, but also a snow line that’s on the high side particularly in the west of the northern Alps.

Based on the current maps, a powder Easter weekend in the east of the northern Alps has the best cards. It will either be Tyrol and Salzburg.

The next update will be on Monday.

Stay stoked

What do you think about the Zillertal on Saturday? Will there be a big difference in the amount of snow between Hohe Tauern and Zillertal?

@@burks, southern Zillertal might be good. They got 10-25. Kitztsteinhorn has 15-30 cm already.
