It was a good day at the glacier today. Some freshies came down and the sun came out. Given the fact that it’s still the middle of September, the conditions were pretty good. It was very tempting to leave the marked slopes (and some people did), but this is not a wise thing to do early in the season, so we only skied on the slopes. There are plenty of crevasses close to the marked slopes (check out the pictures). Every year, there are several skiers and snowboarders who get themselves into trouble on the Austria glaciers. Lured by untracked snow they go further and further until the shit hits the fan.
Strong advice
Please, don’t leave the marked slopes on a glacier. It’s not a great idea to do this without a guide and especially during the early season! Learn more about the risks in the backcountry here.
Winter is coming
But okay, it’s September the 20th and the snow was awesome. Above 3000 meters, the snow was pretty dry in the morning, but when the sun came out, the snow warmed up quickly and the conditions were quite similar to the end of the season. We still have to wait a bit longer for winter to arrive, but this was a nice and quick fix today at the Hintertuxer Gletscher.
