The Alps will remain under the spell of warmer air for a few more days. The peak is reached on Saturday with temperatures well above 15 degrees. After that we seem to be entering a changeable phase again with a lot of snow opportunities for the Southern Alps. Today a somewhat shorter weather forecast than usual. On Friday I will come back to all the details in detail.

In the Alps, the warm (south) westerly current still dominates. Even today, warm and humid air is still supplied from the southwest, but a cold front will cool it all down a bit in the course of the afternoon. Although the active precipitation area continues through northern France to Germany, especially the areas on the far north side of the northwestern Alps can also receive some of this precipitation and increasing winds. With a maximum of 10 centimeters in the forecast it will not be a lot. In addition, the initial snow line is above 2000 meters. With the passage of the cold front, it then drops to an altitude of about 1500 meters.

The real cold air does not persist, so it can get a lot warmer at altitude tomorrow. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow it will remain almost dry and mostly sunny, with denser clouds during the day, especially in the northwestern Alps. Only in the night from Thursday to Friday it can snow temporarily in the French Northern Alps and Northern Piedmont, but these amounts are negligible.

Spring-like in the Northern Alps

An increasing Südföhn will cause sharply rising temperatures in the Northern Alps from Friday. The Südföhn reaches its peak on Saturday, with temperatures in the typical föhn valleys in the Northern Alps reaching above 15 degrees. In the western Southern Alps, it will start to snow at the same time with increasing thrust in the course of Saturday. On Sunday, this precipitation spreads over the entire Southern Alps and half a meter of snow can fall on a large scale. According to current calculations, the snow line seems to remain around 1500 meters.
