Want to ride fresh powder next weekend? As in: real snow and no artificial snow? It's possible! More and more areas on the south side of the Alps that have benefited from the huge dumps early November are opening their lifts this weekend. Some of them even for the first time this winter. There is a lot of snow above 2000-2300 meters and there is more snow in the forecast between Friday and Sunday. Bad visibility can be a deal breaker. Especially because the snow cover below the tree line is still too thin. Tree runs are not an option yet. Nevertheless, it is going to be fun with the all fresh snow. The following areas have a good base and will get even more snow the next couple of hours.
If you want to know the weather forecast per area, click on the name of the area below and you will find everything you need for next weekend. The weather forecast, webcams, an overview of the terrain and some beautiful off-piste lines. Keep in mind that it is still early in the season, sometimes the snow cover is (too) thin and there are all kinds of alpine dangers (branches, crevasses on glaciers, rocks, avalanches).
From west to east the areas that you could consider:
Saas Fee: The glacier of Saas Fee is already open. Please note that the Alpin express is closed until November 23rd, but it should open again this weekend.
San Domenico: scheduled to open on 24-25th November. Already 280 cm at the top. San Domenico is the bright light with a amazing snow statistics. Still a bit unknown, but in recent years there have been considerable investments.
Andermatt: Andermatt is one of the best places in Switzerland right now. It gets snow almost from all directions and the conditions are already good. We'll have to look see whether the Gemsstock picks up snow from the south again in the coming days. The Vorgipfel couloir has already been skied.
Corvatsch: The Corvatsch opens this weekend. Conditions are good, especially from the mid station. Let's see how good super mario land already is.
Santa Caterina: Great base on the top and you can most certainly make some nice turns. The valley run is open thanks to artificial snow.
Passo Tonale - Presena: the lifts to the Presena glacier are on. Let's hope the amazing run through the tunnel is already possible. Let me know!
