Finally fresh snow in the Alps. The southern Alps will have to deal with a huge dump. Especially in the Dolomites a lot of snow will fall. It started snowing in the French Southern Alps on Friday morning, but soon the snowfall will spread to the eastern part of the southern Alps. In this live blog we will keep you informed about the snowfall!
The situation in Tyrol is very bad due to the extreme snowfall. The Ötztalstraße towards Sölden is closed and will remain so as long as it is not possible to fly to assess the danger. Due to the storm, power has been cut and telephone traffic is not possible. The population has been asked to report to the fire stations in case of an emergency. A total of 3500 households are without electricity.
At the moment there are also many precipitation records (unfortunately not only snow) broken. In the village of Kornat (Lesachtal) in Carinthia, 190mm of precipitation has fallen in 24 hours. The highest precipitation ever in any winter month in southern Austria. In Silian already three times as much precipitation has fallen as normal in an entire winter. This morning the they already got 204 mm of precipitation.
A few pictures of the huge dump today:
The avalanche danger is very high in many places in the Alps. In Italy, the avalanche danger is high in many places and sometimes even extreme.
It snowed nicely in the southern French Alps, as you can see here. Rider Rogier said: "there was more snow, the snow has settled, and the conditions improved." Great snow, and again it was great touring ".
In Austria, more than a meter of snow has fallen in several places. The most snow came down in Obertilliach: 104cm, Sillian: 93cm and St. Jakob in Defereggen: 85cm. All this fresh snow is of course very problematic for now. Two avalanches have descended in Ultental, in South Tyrol. Several houses were damaged and several people had to be evacuated.
More than a meter of snow has already been measured at several places. The Piz la Ila measuring station in Alta Badia has 84 cm, in Schwemmalm it is 102 cm and close by in Laurein 104 cm. The snow also causes a lot of inconvenience here. Many trees are falling and roads are blocked.
And it is also snowing in Livigno!
It's snowing heavily in the southern French Alps. The snow line is relatively low and areas such as Puy Saint Vincent, Serre Chevalier and Vars - Risoul already received decent amounts of snow. However, it is clearly visible on the webcams that the wind is very strong above the tree line. This will create dangerous avalanche conditions.
The first avalanche forecast of this winter has been published in Livigno.
The ZAMG has issued a weather warning for parts of Austria from tomorrow. Carinthia and the main alpine ridge in particular are colored red.
They were already riding powder in the extreme south of the Alps yesterday. We got this picture from Andrea from Freeride Vallescrivia from Mondolè Ski.
