Lots of fresh snow in the Alps from Monday!

The upcoming week will be one of the busiest weeks in the Alps of this winter. A week that starts cold and brings a lot of snow between Sunday evening and Tuesday morning, after which a southern Föhn kicks in and a new front with lots of snow arrives in the Alps. It’s a week with all kinds of weather and most likely two PowderAlerts. Check out the video below for an overview.

Crowded in the Alps

It will be crowded in the Alps next week. Millions of skiers and snowboarders enjoy their holidays in one of the hundreds of ski resorts in the Alps. Although it is busy, you definitely ride powder in peak season. With two PowderAlerts coming up, it won’t hurt reading this article about how to avoid the crowds.

Steep lines on Saturday and Sunday morning

A weak front will bring some flakes the next 36 hours, but do not expect significant amounts of snow. However, it results in cloudy conditions in the west and north of the Alps, so the visibility will suck. Conditions will improve on Saturday and because the avalanche risk is MODERATE in large parts of the Alps (2 on a scale of 5) you could consider riding some big lines. In addition, keep in mind that the avalanche danger will rise again from Monday when new storms enter the Alps.

PA #15: tree runs on Monday and Tuesday

An active front will arrive in the Alps during the course of Sunday. It is possible that the path of the storm will change a little the next couple of hours. The following regions are most likely to get significant amounts of fresh snow:

• Swiss northern alpine ridge: (Kanton Bern, Zentralschweiz and Ostschweiz)
• Vorarlberg
• Hohe Tauern (the south of the Salzburgerland, the north of Osttirol and the northwest of Carinthia)
• Alpe Adria (the border between Slovenia, Alpe di Giulia and Carinthia)

The fresh snow cover will be a bit thin on Monday morning, but it will be much thicker by the afternoon. Tuesday will be a great day to ride powder.

Föhn on Wednesday and a new storm kicking in?

The jet stream remains west and this allows new storms to find their way to the Alps. The wind turns south on Wednesday (when the new storm is kicking in) and the northern Alps are temporarily exposed to a Föhn from the south (wind drifted snow!). Cold air arrives from the northwest of the Alps later and the Föhn will calm down. It is still a bit of a guess where the sweetspot of this storm will be, but I hope to be able to tell you that on Sunday.
