PA#11 is in full swing and tomorrow will be a top day in the Northern Alps with lots of fresh snow and more room for sunshine. On Wednesday, it already gets considerably warmer again, but it remains changeable for the rest of the week. So that means we’ll have to deal with a higher snowline again. From the weekend onwards, a new drop in the temperatures seems imminent again with possibly lots of snow again.

PA#11

We are in the middle of PA#11! A lot of snow has already fallen in the northern stau areas (around 30 to 50 centimetres on a large scale) and tonight another 10 to 20 centimetres will be added. The wind has been quite strong today as well, so it will be really careful, especially when the sun comes out tomorrow and the powder stress starts to rise.

Tuesday sunny

High pressure influence from the west will make tomorrow (Tuesday) a mostly sunny day with some residual clouds. In eastern Austria, the last remnants of the Nordstau will move further east in the morning. From the west, however, new clouds will also soon move in. A sign that it is getting milder and that a new weather change is coming.

Softer with precipitation again

The high-pressure core that will provide temporary fine weather tomorrow will also soon move eastwards again, ensuring that the Alps will again be in a south-westerly flow with the supply of considerably softer air masses. On Wednesday morning, with the passage of a warm front, the Northern Alps will get some more precipitation in the process, with a rising snowline this time. Although there really are still some uncertainties in the details, the snowline seems to reach around 1,500 metres (temporarily even lower in Austria in the inner-Alpine valleys), but with the entry of the warm air, the snowline could rise further during the day. In the French Northern Alps and western Switzerland even well above 2,000 metres. The exact precipitation amounts are also still quite difficult to determine. Particularly in the northern areas of Switzerland, it seems that most of the precipitation could fall, but our weather model shows the centre of gravity more eastwards towards Austria. So it will also be a bit of nowcasting.

After that, it will remain changeable with a westerly flow. New precipitation in form of showers will follow from the west on Thursday. The snowline will stay around 1,800 to 2,000 metres. Friday during the day, new precipitation will again follow, with the snowline initially still high, but colder air will flow in from the northwest in the evening.

Colder again from the weekend

Over the weekend, a serious cooling seems imminent again. We see this well in the ensembles and also that it is accompanied by even more precipitation from the French Northern Alps to Austria. We are again talking about serious amounts of possibly 50 centimetres to very possibly locally a metre of snow. The snowline also looks like it could end up around 1,000 metres again. So, after a few somewhat difficult mild days, a great prospect! More on these developments later this week in a new weather report.
